Aussie Broadband wins top national award for diversity and inclusion

Media Release | Wednesday 24 Nov 2021 | 2 min read

Aussie Broadband has won a top national Diversity and Inclusion award at this year’s ACOMMS.

The ACOMMS are the major telco industry awards for Australia and are run by the Communications Alliance.

The judges were impressed by Aussie’s ‘Inclusion First’ program, which focuses on real actions rather than words on paper, meaning diversity and inclusion have become part of the company’s DNA.

Managing Director Phillip Britt said he was truly humbled to receive such a prestigious award.

“I’m very honoured to accept this accolade on behalf of the team, because diversity and inclusion is really important to us here at Aussie Broadband. This award is a huge recognition of all the amazing work everyone does at Aussie with our ‘Inclusion First’ approach. I would like to thank every one of the team members at Aussie Broadband,” he said.

The winners were announced last week at a Gala Awards Dinner in Sydney.

Aussie Broadband were also finalists in the Commitment to Customer Service, Community Contribution, and Innovation (Carbon) categories.

“We are focused on building a culture of inclusion at Aussie Broadband. This is a place where we want staff to feel safe to bring their whole self to work, if they choose to. We believe that if we focus on inclusion, diversity will naturally follow,” Phil said.

The company’s diversity and inclusion programs are guided by a Staff Working Group – which any staff member can contribute to.

“Our ‘Inclusion First’ program gives staff the chance to help shape company policy and initiatives. By encouraging our staff to become more involved, they take ownership, contribute and provide more diverse thinking,” he said.

For example, Aussie’s recent staff-led initiatives include things like gender neutral bathroom facilities in its offices and ROAR (room of any requirement) which can be used for any purpose such as breastfeeding/pumping or a prayer room etc.

Yesterday, a panel representing Aussie Broadband chaired a session on Intersectionality in the workplace at the 3-day Pride in Practice national conference.

Aussie has also developed partnerships with a range of organisations, including Pride in Diversity, STEM Sisters, Vic ICT for Women and Gippsland Disability Shadow Day.

Communications Alliance CEO, John Stanton, said: “The ACOMM Awards represent the pinnacle of achievement for the Australian communications industry and I congratulate all the winners and finalists in the 2021 ACOMMS,” he said.
