eero Setup Guide

You've just gotten your brand new eero hardware, and want to get started. You've come to the right place!

How to set up your eero Pro 6E/6+ router

In the box(s):

  • Your new eero(s)

  • Ethernet cable

  • Power cord(s) if applicable to your eero model

What you’ll need:

  • eero iOS app or Android app

  • Minimum iOS version 15.0 or minimum Android OS version 9.0

  • Mobile device with a data connection (If you don't have access to a data connection, see our workaround instructions here.)

  • Internet service provided into your home

  • Existing modem/router (if applicable)

1. Download the eero app for iOS or Android:

To set up your eero 6 device, you must first download the eero app. Google Play Store BadgeiOS App store badge

2. Create an eero account or log in with your Amazon account

You must either create a new eero account or log in to an existing Amazon account to proceed. Once logged in, tap "get started" on the eero app.

3. Set up your eero Gateway

Your eero Gateway is your "primary" eero, which is used to establish your network. If you have purchased additional eero devices, they will be become "satellite" devices. It does not matter which eero device you decide to use as your Gateway.

  1. First, unplug your old modem and router from the power outlet. If you have other wireless equipment connected to your modem, please unplug it as well.

  2. Connect your Gateway eero device to your modem using the ethernet cable that came in the box. You can use either of the ethernet ports on the back of your eero.

  3. Plug your Gateway eero device in to an available power outlet, then reconnect your modem to power. Your eero device’s status light will start flashing white.
    Note: if you do not have an existing modem, instead of plugging in your eero device into a modem, you will plug it into your nbn™ NTD.

4. Create your eero network

Now that you’ve got your modem and gateway eero plugged in, it’s time to create your eero network.

Tap "next" in your eero app. You will notice that your gateway eero's LED will begin to flash blue and then turn solid blue once found. Once your eero has been detected, you will be prompted to select a location for your eero (this is how you will identify each eero on your network).

  • If prompted, you may need to enter your eero’s serial number, which is located on a sticker attached to the bottom of your eero. Just look for a barcode with the letters SN on it – it’s small, but it’s there.

Once you've selected a location for your eero, you will enter your network name (SSID) and network password. This is how devices will join your network. 

  • If you’re replacing an existing router, an easy option for choosing a network name (SSID) and password is to simply reuse your current SSID and password. This way, you won’t have to reconnect devices that were previously on the network.

  • Keep in mind that running two networks with the same SSID can be problematic. If you have a modem/router combo device, we encourage you to enable bridge mode on the modem/router so that your devices do not accidentally join the wrong network. If for any reason bridge mode is not available, you can also setup your network in double nat. Tap "next" to complete your initial set up. If you only have a single eero, tap "finish setup". If you have additional satellite eeros, tap "add another eero device" and proceed to step 5.

5. Add satellite eeros to your network

Once you’ve set up your gateway eero, your new network has been created and you can begin adding additional satellite eeros to extend your network. You can add any eero device to your existing network, even if it is a different model. You can connect satellite eeros either wirelessly or via an ethernet cable.

Plug your eero device into a power outlet and tap the "next" arrow in the eero app. You'll follow the same steps you did when setting up your Gateway eero.

Repeat this step for any additional eero devices.


Setup your eero without mobile data

To set up your eero device, you must use the eero app on a device with an internet connection. If you have poor or no mobile data service where you live, you must take the following additional steps when following our eero set up guide:

  1. Do not unplug your old modem (nbn box) and router from the power outlet when prompted to during Step 3. Instead, plug your Gateway eero directly into your existing router using an ethernet cable. This way, you can use your current WiFi network to complete the setup and switch over to your eero network once setup is complete.
    For the technical minded, this is known as 'double NATing' your network.

  2. During Step 4, ensure that the SSID for your eero network is different from the SSID of your current network.

  3. If you have a standalone router, you can remove your old router once your eero network is up and running. Simply unplug the eero from your router, power cycle your nbn box, and then plug your eero directly into the nbn box. When power cycling your nbn box, please be sure to wait until your nbn box is fully powered back on before plugging your eero into it. After you plug your eero into your nbn box, you’ll no longer need your old router.

  4. If you have a modem/router combo device, you can put that device into bridge mode or optimal network performance.

Setting up your eero with an existing router

To get the most out of your eero WiFi system, we recommend having your eero WiFi system replace your current router and having your gateway eero plugged directly into your modem. However, if you'd like to keep using your existing router, you absolutely can.

In this scenario, you will have two options for using your eero devices: putting them in bridge mode or double NAT-ing them. We will go a bit more into each of these use cases below.

Note: For FTTN/B connections, it is required that you bridge your eero to an existing router.

Bridging your eero

The first option you have is putting your eero into bridge mode. In this scenario, you will still get all the benefits of eeros mesh, however, you will allow your upstream router to manage the connection between your network and ISP. It should also be noted that when using eero in bridge mode, you will lose many advanced features.

To bridge your eero:

  1. Create your eero network: Follow the setup flow in the eero app.

    • Note: If your network configuration necessitates bridge mode to function, you’ll have to first set up your eero network by double NATing.

  2. Bridge your eero by following the instructions below:

  • Open the eero app and tap Settings (bottom right corner)

  • Tap Network Settings

  • Tap DHCP & NAT

  • Switch your selection from Automatic (recommended) to Bridge or Manual (for those running static IP)

  • Tap the Save button in the top right corner

Double NAT-ing your eero

While it sounds a bit complicated, double NAT-ing your eeros is fairly simple. 

If you have a separate router and modem, don't plug your gateway eero directly into your modem, as the eero app suggests. Instead, plug your gateway eero into your existing router. From there, follow the remaining setup instructions in your eero app.

If you have a modem/router combo device, simply plug your gateway eero into the combo device and follow the setup instructions from there. In this case, you also have the option of putting your modem/router combo device into bridge mode, so it'll only act as a modem.

When double NAT-ing, be sure to use a different SSID and password for your eero network than your existing network. Running two networks with the same SSID simultaneously will lead to technical complications.


What the eero lights mean

On the front of your eero, there is a LED status light. When everything is running correctly, your eero's light will be solid white.

If your LED is in a different state, including a different colour or is blinking/flashing, please refer to the list below:
