As the name suggests, a static IP is one that remains static. It does not change and is assigned manually to your device. By default, we use dynamic IP addresses and CGNAT (Carrier-Grade Network Address Translation) on internet services we provide. A dynamic IP address is an IP address that changes from time to time, unlike a static IP address that stays the same. 

You might want or need to obtain a static IP address for various reasons. Some of the benefits of having a static IP are: 

• You can host servers – such as web servers, email servers, or FTP servers – that other computers can access using their internet connection. You can also access your network and devices remotely from anywhere in the world with a static IP address. 

• You can enjoy better reliability on services hosted with your static IP. Otherwise, when using a dynamic IP, the end-users accessing your hosted services would need to be informed every time your IP address cycles to a new one. 

• You can support better DNS, voice communication, VPNs, and games with a static IP address.  

How to get a static IP address for your internet service

If you've signed up for one of our Business plans, you automatically get 1 static IP address on that service.  

Static IPs are not included in Residential services by default, but you can always add a Static IP to your service for an extra $5 per month.  Additional IP addresses are available to customers on a Business service if more than one is needed. 

There are two different ways to apply a static IP address to your broadband service:  

• While viewing your internet service in the MyAussie® portal or app, tap the plus ( + ) icon above Static IP in the Boltons section. 

• Alternatively, you can call our Customer Service team to have us apply one to your account over the phone.
