What is Fixed Wireless (FW) broadband?

Fixed Wireless (FW) technology helps to connect customers from regional and remote areas to the NBN. Fixed Wireless broadband requires an installation appointment where an outdoor antenna is installed and fitted to the roof by an approved nbn® installer.

In some instances where the roof is not appropriate for installation, it may be attached to a gutter or via other means available at the premises. This is known as a ‘non-standard installation’ and may take more time to complete.

The Fixed Wireless antenna connects to a nbn® device installed inside of the premises. Data is then transmitted over radio signals on the broadband access network. The device has four UNI-D ports that are used to connect to your modem/router. We have a handy diagram showing how all of these devices and cables are connected – click here to view it.

Fixed Wireless speeds vary on several different factors, some of the main ones include: the amount of wireless coverage available, how many users are connected to the same nbn® towers, if there’s any radio interference, wind or rain in the area, and line-of-sight obstructions to the radio tower that could reduce the strength of its signal.
